Uno Restaurant Holdings Corp. operates
more than 200 company-owned and franchise restaurants under the
name Uno Chicago Grill. These restaurants are located in 30 states,
the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, South Korea and the United
Arab Emirates.
Uno is best-known for its Chicago-style
deep dish pizza but also serves steaks, ribs, pasta, grilled
chicken, hamburgers and seafood. Restaurants also have a full
bar.
The company also operates a consumer foods
division, which supplies airlines, movie theaters, hotel restaurants
and supermarkets with both frozen and refrigerated private label
foods and branded Uno products.
Uno has total revenues of more than $500
million. It is owned by Centre Partners, a private equity firm
with offices in New York and Los Angeles.
History
1943 -
Pizzeria Uno began when Ike Sewell opened a restaurant in Chicago
that specialized in serving his new creation, deep-dish pizza.
1955 - To
handle overflow traffic from the original Pizzeria Uno, a second
Uno restaurant opened one block away from the Original Uno, called
Pizzeria Due
1975 - Aaron
Spencer, current Chairman, first tasted Pizzeria Uno pizza at
a meeting in downtown Chicago
1978 - Spencer
gained Sewell's approval to expand the concept to other markets
1979 - First
Uno restaurant outside of Chicago opened in Boston
1980 - The
first Uno franchise unit opened in Washington, D.C.
1987 - Uno
became a publicly owned company (NYSE:UNO)
1994 - Uno
added kitchen equipment like sauté stations, charbroilers,
grills and fryers to its restaurants
1995 - New
menu offerings, including steaks, pastas and fajitas were introduced
2001 - Uno
Restaurant Holdings Corp. became a private company in a $41 million
merger with a corporation formed by Chairman Aaron Spencer and
other company executives
2003 -
Restaurant name evolves to Uno Chicago Grill
February 2005
- Uno Restaurant Holdings Corporation entered into an agreement
with Centre Partners, a leading middle market private equity
firm with offices in New York and Los Angeles, whereby Centre
Partners acquired a controlling interest in the company. Aaron
Spencer, the company's Founder and Chairman, as well as the senior
members of the Uno management team, also maintained significant
ownership.
