AS&E, which stands for American Science
& Engineering, develops X-ray inspection systems that are
used by governments and corporations around the world to combat
terrorism, drug and weapons smuggling, illegal immigration, and
trade fraud.
The company's patented technology, Z Backscatter,
creates photo-like X-ray images revealing the threats that other
systems might miss, including explosives, plastic weapons, and
drugs.
The company's client base
includes the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (including
U.S. Customs and Border Protection) and the U.S. Department of
Defense, among numerous other federal agencies. International
customers include Her Majesty's Customs & Excise (UK), Hong
Kong Customs, the Royal Thai Police (Thailand), New Zealand Customs,
and the Port of Sokhna (Egypt).
The technology can be used to inspect cargo
and vehicles, mail, parcels and baggage as well as people.
For fiscal 2009, AS&E reported revenues of $218.3 million. Net income was $28.3 million.
History
Formed in Cambridge, MA in 1958, AS&E
began as a developer of scientific instruments and applications
for NASA. In 1959, Dr. Riccardo Giacconi joined AS&E and
created an X-ray astronomy team. In the coming decades, Dr. Giacconi's
team made a succession of pioneering discoveries and developments
in the field of X-ray technology, including the discovery of
the first known X-ray source outside the solar system (1962),
the first successful soft X-ray photograph of the sun (1965),
the launch of the first satellite dedicated completely to X-ray
astronomy (1970), and the launch of the Einstein Observatory
- world's largest X-ray telescope (1978). Dr. Giacconi's pioneering
work at AS&E later earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics.
