Akamai helps companies deliver information over the Internet from important data to streaming video using its own on-demand distributed computing platform.
The company says it handles 15-30% of all Internet traffic and over 2 trillion daily Internet transactions per day thru its network of over 160,000 servers in 95 countries within over 1,200 networks.
Akamai has offices throughout the U.S. as well as Europe, Japan and Australia. The company's headquarters and network operations center is located in Cambridge, MA.
Akamai was originally formed via an MIT Entrepreneurship competition to help deliver content over the Internet via distributed servers. Akamai officially launched in April 1999 and Yahoo was a charter customer.
In addition to Yahoo, many top companies rely on Akamai servers for their online business including Apple, Adobe, Best Buy, JCPenney, Netflix, Travelocity, FedEx, 1-800-Flowers, Charles Schwab and others.
In 2014, the company reported record revenues of $1.96 billion, a 24% increase, and net income of $333.9 million.
"Akamai's strong fourth quarter performance capped off a record year on both the top and bottom line," said Dr. Tom Leighton, CEO of Akamai. "Our strong revenue results continued to be driven by solid performance across all our geographies and all of our major product lines, with very strong growth coming from our Security and Media products. As we look forward to 2015, we expect to continue investing in the business with the goals of building out our network, expanding sales capacity, deepening channel relationships and accelerating innovation to help our customers secure and grow their on-line businesses."
