Akamai helps companies deliver information over the Internet from important data to streaming video. The company uses its own on-demand distributed computing platform, with more than 40,000 servers in 950 networks in 75 countries.
The company says it handles up to 20% of the Internet's traffic and billions of Internet transactions per day.
Akamai has offices throughout the U.S. as well as Europe, Japan and Australia. The company's headquarters and network operations center is located in Cambridge, MA. The company has over 1,400 employees including more than 600 in Massachusetts.
Akamai was originally formed via an MIT
Entrepreneurship competition to help deliver content over the
Internet via distributed servers. Akamai officially launched
in April 1999 and Yahoo was a charter customer.
In addition to Yahoo, many top companies
rely on Akamai servers for their online business including Apple
Computer, Best Buy, E-Trade, Travelocity, 1-800-Flowers, Charles
Schwab and others. Six of the top seven computer companies are
Akamai customers and half of the 50 top online retailers.
In 2008, the company generated revenues of $790.9 million and net income of $145.1 million.
The number of customers under long-term service contracts at the end of the fourth quarter increased by 50 to a record 2,858, an 8 percent increase year-over-year.
